TRAINING 4: RACIAL TRAUMA, PTSD AND C-PTSD
- VIRTUAL - Tuesday 29th April 2025
$880 per person
$800 per person early bird
5% discount for group bookings
This workshop focuses specifically on Complex Racial Trauma and argues that it should be considered as a separate category of trauma. This is in terms of its symptom-based differences and the culture bound syndromes specific to the manifestation of trauma and attachment in Aboriginal clients. Participants will be provided with an understanding of the concept of Acculturative Stress (Culture Stress) as a method of better understanding the concept of Racial Trauma in Indigenous populations
This Session:
- from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (with breaks)
- 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm The afternoon session (until 4:00 pm) is an open Q & A session on complex clients that participants are able to ask of Dr Westerman. This will be a moderated session with questions sent in prior to the workshop.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
- Explain Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the history behind its evolution as a mental illness
- Describe the research into the cultural interpretation and manifestation of PTSD
- Describe the differentials across cultures in terms of what defines trauma and how it is interpreted
- Explain what makes some individuals more vulnerable to the development of PTSD than others and the specific factors that increase trauma vulnerability for Aboriginal people
- Explain why successful treatment of Racial Trauma follows a different course to treatment of non-Aboriginal clients. This involves being able to contextualise trauma within the prevailing beliefs of the community and intervening within the multiple layers of trauma that impact on at the individual level for Aboriginal clients
- Comorbidity and treatment focus
- The ‘trauma triad’ – as a focus of treatment interventions
- Achieving goals in trauma therapy
- Dealing with nightmares and flashbacks
- Sleep and avoidance behaviours
- Explain the impact of removal policies in terms of how attachment can be affected.
- Participants will learn how about cultural interpretation of attachment styles and how this holds the key to the prevention of intergenerational trauma
- Explain the difference between PTSD, Complex PTSD and Racial Trauma
- Understand Acculturative Stress as Racial Trauma
- Provide applied case studies and examples on Racial Trauma using the Acculturative Stress Scale for Aboriginal Australians (AS-AA: Westerman, 2003) as a framework of assessment and treatment
- Describe Racial Trauma as a separate trauma category and how to address the impacts at an individual client and whole of community level
You can undertake these workshops as ‘stand alone workshops’
However: if you would like to be accredited in the Westerman Aboriginal Symptom Checklist – Youth and Adults which are about to be launched in digital form you will need to do all FIVE modules. This accreditation will also enable you to access the associated Cultural Treatment Plan program and Client Cultural Interview Process.
