This module will assist you to be able to understand the causal contributors to the over-representation of Aboriginal people in suicides, child removals, incarceration and poor educational outcomes.
This Session:
- from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (with breaks)
- 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm The afternoon session (until 4:00 pm) is an open Q & A session on complex clients that participants are able to ask of Dr Westerman. This will be a moderated session with questions sent in prior to the workshop.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
Aboriginal mental health
- Understand why we have failed to develop robust mental health data in Aboriginal populations and the implications
- Understand the difference between social and emotional wellbeing and mental health
- Understand why culturally informed assessment is vital to ‘closing the gap’
Suicide Prevention:
- Understand the unique causal pathways to Indigenous suicide and why this failure has led to suicide escalation.
- Explain why addressing risk factors alone is not sufficient to reduce Indigenous suicides
- Explore the need for tailored interventions that consider cultural and trauma factors
- Explain the alarming rates of Indigenous youth suicide, including key statistics and contributing factors
- Recall past efforts to address Indigenous youth suicide, including the significant Government inquiries
- Summarise the need for measurable outcomes in suicide prevention programs.
- Summarise The need for culturally sensitive mental health assessment to ensure impactful programs with measurable outcomes
Child Protection:
- Understand the context of the escalating rates of Indigenous child removals and how forced removals remain as core drivers
- Explain the impacts of intergenerational trauma and the evidence to support this
- Understand attachment theory and how this translates culturally
- Understand the impacts of systemic racism and media representation of child removals as core drivers in a lack of prevention efforts
- Understand the evidence that links improvements in cultural competency in reducing child removals
Educational Outcomes.
- Explain the reasons for poor Aboriginal education attainment levels
- Explain Aboriginal English and its role in education systems and developing numeracy and literacy
- Explain how cultural identity impacts on intelligence testing
- Understand the concepts of test reliability and validity and how culture impacts
- Explain how Aboriginal child rearing practices and cognitive styles are often at odds within a traditional educational setting.
Incarceration and Justice.
- Consider reasons for Aboriginal overrepresentation in Australia's prison system.
- Explain the unique causal reasons behind the high rates of incarceration
- Explain the concept of geomapping and the intergenerationally incarcerated
- Explain how exposure to criminality increases risk for criminality
- Explain the impact of racial profiling and racism on incarceration rates
- Explain the reasons for escalation in youth incarceration and why we must 'Raise The Age" of criminal responsibility
- Explain the impact of "other race effect" in incarceration and deaths in custody
- Explain how flawed assessments drive racial bias in systems and the absence of prevention focus
You can undertake these workshops as ‘stand alone workshops’
However: if you would like to be accredited in the Westerman Aboriginal Symptom Checklist – Youth and Adults which are about to be launched in digital form you will need to do all FIVE modules. This accreditation will also enable you to access the associated Cultural Treatment Plan program and Client Cultural Interview Process.
