Indigenous Psychological Services (IPS) is a private company founded in 1998 by Dr. Tracy Westerman of the Nyamal people of the North West of Western Australia. Dr Westerman is a recognised leader in the Aboriginal mental health field having won numerous awards and recognition for her contribution to the Aboriginal mental health field. She developed IPS to address the paucity of specialist mental health services for Aboriginal people, despite the obvious need for these. IPS maintains a social justice focus through its annual provision of FREE essential services into identified Aboriginal communities in need despite an absence of funding for any of its services.
IPS’ services commenced from its origins in Western Australia to having a significant service delivery presence across New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Victoria since 2003. IPS track record of success over the past fourteen years in this very challenging and complex field is directly attributable to a number of principles which define our organisation including:
- We recognise the uniqueness of Aboriginal culture and limitations of mainstream approaches to mental health service delivery. IPS has undertaken award winning, nationally and internationally recognised research which has resulted in the development of a unique range of training packages, workforce development products and programs, psychological tests, and community intervention programs,
- We recognise the diversity of Aboriginal culture and never assume a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Our research rigour combined with our significant presence in Aboriginal communities has resulted in being able to demonstrate the successful application of our programs and services across twenty (20) distinct Aboriginal groups Australia wide,
- We demonstrate to our clients that we have made a measurable difference them. This is through our unique ability to measure and improve the cultural competencies of individuals and organisations, and in our ability to successfully gauge skills development within communities in which we deliver our programs.
It is these principles that have resulted in IPS being a firmly established leader in the provision of innovative, culturally specific Aboriginal mental health services. IPS has THREE main areas of service delivery including:
Aboriginal Mental Health Training
Cultural Competency Intervention Programs
Aboriginal Mental Health and Suicide Intervention Programs
Our Product range complements these services and includes:
Workforce Development Products
